Kenya Entry requirements for UK citizens

All foreign nationals except the citizens of 43 selected countries required a visa to enter Kenya. When it comes to citizens of the United Kingdom, obtaining a visa is a must, and entering the country without a visa will lead to serious legal consequences.

Citizens of UK can apply for a Kenya visa either by applying for an electronic visa or by visiting the Kenyan High Commission.

Kenya e-visas

Kenya e-visas are electronically issued by the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs. These visas can be obtained online, and all you need to do is uploading the desired documents along with the photograph.

After uploading the documents, the applicant will be asked to pay a fee for the Kenya visa. Once the fee is paid, authorities will sanction the visa within 72 hours if all the documents submitted by you are true.

However, in certain cases, some applications will be thoroughly reviewed by the Kenyan government, and if it happens, the visa approval process may take 7 days to get complete.

Please find below certain criteria you should follow while uploading passport and photograph during e-visa application.

Passport

The copy of the passport you are submitting should be clear, and there should be no borders.
The uploaded passport copy should be saved in JPEG, JPG, or PDF file format.

Photograph

The height and width of the photo should be equal.
You should face the photo straight, with eyes open.
The background of the photo should be either white or any other light color.
It should be noted that there should be now shadows either on the photos nor on the background.
There should be no borders in the photograph.

Regular Kenya visas

For obtaining a regular Kenya visa, the foreign national should visit the Kenyan High Commission, and should fill the visa application form. The applicant should also submit the required documents along with photographs.

Different types of Kenya visas

Kenya offers various visa types to foreign nationals depending upon the purpose of the visit. Please find below the visas offered by the Kenyan Ministry of Foreign Affairs to foreign nationals to enter the country.

Tourist visa

Tourist visas are issued by Kenya to foreign nationals who wish to enter the country for tourist-related activities. People who visit Kenya using a tourist visa should ensure that they are not working or engaging in any business activities during their stay in the country.

The validity of a normal Kenya e-tourist visa will be 90 days. However, if you want multiple entry, you can apply for multiple entry regular visas, and it will offer a validity of either six months or one year as per the need of the traveler.

Requirements to obtain a tourist e-visa

Please find below the documents that should be submitted to obtain a tourist e-visa.

The copy of the passport should be uploaded. The passport of the foreign national should have at least six months validity, and it should also have at least one blank page.
The foreign national should hold proof of sufficient funds.
Should have proof of flight onward and return flight tickets.
Should produce proof of hotel reservation.
The photograph should be taken within the last six months.
It is also recommended to submit a letter of invitation from the host in Kenya.
If you are a non-UK citizen applying for a Kenya tourist visa, you should submit the residence permit/work permit/student permit.
The applicant should also completely fill the e-visa questionnaire.

Special note: Minors (children under the age of 18), if traveling of their own should submit a consent letter from either parent.

How to obtain multiple entry Kenya visas?

Multiple entry Kenya visas are usually issued to foreign nationals who wish to enter the country multiple times during the visa validity period. In order to obtain a multiple entry Kenya tourist visa, the foreign national should submit a personal statement that details the necessity of a multiple entry visa.

Apart from the personal statement, the foreign national should also submit all the documents that are needed to obtain a e-tourist visa. The traveler should also produce proofs of three previous Kenya visits.

Special note: Sometimes, the foreign national will not be granted multiple entry visa, as these visas are issued solely at the discretion of the Kenyan authorities.

Kenya business visa

Kenya business visas are issued to foreign nationals including citizens of the United Kingdom who want to enter the country for business-related conferences, seminars and other commercial trading activities.

Foreign nationals should understand that a Kenya business visa will not allow people to do work in the country.

Please find below the requirements to obtain a Kenya business visa

The UK citizen should submit his or her national passport which has six months validity, and it should also have two blank pages for visa stamp.
The applicant should submit a photograph with white background, and it should be taken within the last six months.
A business introduction letter from the applicant’s UK employer should be submitted.
The applicant should also submit proof of travel arrangements including onward and return flight tickets along with hotel booking confirmation.
People who apply for multiple entry business visas should submit a personal statement that details the necessity of multiple visits to the country. For multiple entry visas, the applicant should also produce proof of his or her previous three visits to Kenya.

Special note: The issuance of multiple entry business visas are not guaranteed, as they are sanctioned solely at the discretion of the visa officer.

How to obtain a work permit to work in Kenya?

You can also apply for a work permit by visiting the website of the Kenyan Department of Immigration Services.

Recently, the government of Kenya had insisted that all foreign nationals working in the country should have all the necessary supporting proofs and necessary work permits. If a foreign national fail to submit these and is working in Kenya, he or she will face strict legal consequences including deportation.

It should be noted that work permit will not get granted all the time, as the government of Kenya is prioritizing the availability of high-quality jobs only for Kenyan nationals.

Kenya Diplomatic official visa

Diplomats in the United Kingdom can apply for Kenya Diplomatic official visa to enter the country. Please find below the necessary documents and details that should be submitted to obtain a Kenyan diplomatic official visa.

The foreign national should submit documents that prove that he or she is traveling on official duty to Kenya.
The UK citizen is responsible for submitting valid national Diplomatic/Official/Service passport. The passport should have six months validity, and it should have two blank pages.
The applicant should also submit a recently taken photograph.
The application form should be properly filled and signed.

Kenya Transit Visas

If you are looking for a short stop over in Kenya while traveling to a different destination, you can apply for a Kenya transit visa. If you want to apply for a transit visa, your passport should have at least six months validity with two blank pages.

However, if you are staying in Kenya for less than 24 hours, there is no need to apply for a transit visa. If you are staying in Kenya as a visa exempt traveler during your journey to a different destination, you should make sure that you have proof of sufficient funds.

You should hold all documents including visa for the next destination.

Kenya East African Visas

Using a Kenya East African Visa, a foreign national can travel to three different countries; Kenya, Uganda and Rwanda. In usual cases, this will be a multiple entry visa which offers three months validity. It should be noted that this visa application should be submitted to the embassy where the traveler wishes to begin the journey.

Apart from passport, photograph and completed visa application form, the foreign national should also submit the below-mentioned documents for obtaining an East African visa.

The applicant should submit a travel plan, and it should contain various details including the name of the foreign national, dates and details regarding places of arrival in Kenya, and places of arrival in the other two African countries. It is also recommended to submit a travel route.
The foreign national should submit proof of travel arrangements like paid onward and return tickets.
Copy of hotel room booking confirmation should be submitted.

Special note: Kenya East African Visas is only for tourist purposes, and it cannot be extended. It should be also noted that foreign nationals are not supposed to engage in paid or unpaid work during their stay in these countries.

Kenya Referred Visas

Citizens of countries including Afghanistan, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cameroon, North Korea, Eritrea, Iraq, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Mali, Palestine, Senegal, Somalia, Syria, Tajikistan and Yemen cannot obtain visas to Kenya via electronic means.

Instead, they are supposed to send their visa applications referred to the Director of Immigration Services, Nairobi. It should be noted that the approval of these referred visas cannot be guaranteed, as the visa sanction will made upon the sole discretion of Kenyan government authorities.
