Everything You Need To Know About A Timor Leste Visa
Holders
of official and ordinary British passports need a visa to enter Timor Leste.
But the good news is that you can get one after arrival at the ports of entry.
You can also apply for a visa in advance through the embassy. However, there
are some rules. Read on to know everything about a Timor Leste visa for UK
citizens.
The
immigration department of Timor Leste issues three major types of visas:
1. Visa on Arrival
2. Ordinary Class I & Class II
Visas
- Regular Tourist Visa
- Regular Business Visa
- Regular Transit Visa
3. Class III (Study) Visa
4. Class IV (Cultural) Visa
5. Work Visa
6. Visa to Establish Residence
Note:
Visas applications under serial numbers 3, 4, 5, and 6 can be lodged only with
theDepartment of Consular Affairs. You can download the formshere.
You
may also apply for study, cultural, work, and establish residence visas after
you arrive in Timor Leste through the Department of Consular Affairs; Ministry
of Foreign Affairs Dili, Timor Leste. You cannot lodge an application at border
posts.
Visa on Arrival
A
visa on arrival is issued after you arrive at the Dili International airport or
Dili seaport. It offers a stay of up to 30 days and is issued for single entry
after payment of $30 if you are traveling for business, transit, or tourism
purposes. Remember to carry the exact amount in cash as sometimes, border posts
have non-functioning ATMs and card machines.
In
order to be eligible for a VOA, you need to have a passport which is valid for
at least six months on entry and has a minimum of two blank visa pages. You
must also present proof of sufficient funds, onward/return airline tickets,
documents specifying the purpose of trip, and all documents required for the
next destination.
You
should also confirm with your respective airlines if they allow boarding
without a visa. Additionally, make sure if there are overseas connecting
flights that need a separate transit visa.
IMPORTANT:
In order to be granted a VOA at border points, it is mandatory that you carry
a“Visa Authorization Application”, which is issued by the Embassy of Timor
Leste in London.
Ordinary Class I & Class II Visas
Ordinary
class I visas are tourist and business visas while class II visas are transit
visas. Ordinary class I visas allow you to enter Timor Leste for tourism or
business and allows a maximum length of stay of 90 days. It is valid for up to
one year and comes in single or multiple entries.
Regular
Tourist Visa
A
regular tourist visa allows you to travel to Timor Leste for a vacation or to
carry out leisurely activities. Its application must be submitted at the
embassy.
The
application documentation is simple. You need to own a valid passport,
passport-size photographs, and a completely filled and signed visa application
form. Apart from this, you need itinerary details, accommodation proof, and
sufficient funds.

Regular
Business Visa
A
regular business visa grants entry into the nation if you wish to engage in
non-income-generating business activities. Its application process and primary
documentation are similar to that of a tourist visa.
Supporting
documents include onward/return tickets, bank statements, business letter and
covering letter.
Regular
Transit Visa
A
class II or transit visa allows you to transit via Timor Leste when you are en
route to another country. It also allows you to change international flights in
a domestic airport. This single entry visa is valid for a maximum of 72 hours.

Entering Timor Leste via the Indonesian Land Border
If
you are planning to enter the country via Indonesia (West Timor) land border
crossing at Atambua or Batugade, you have to apply for a tourist visa in
advance in Kupang. This single-entry visa arrives with a validity and maximum
allowable stay of up to 30 days.
Traveling to Oecussi
If
your travel itinerary includes overland travel (excluding the ferry ride) to
the exclave of Oecussi, you have to apply for an additional visa. In order to
be granted this visa, you should submit your round trip ticket and complete the
necessary forms at your nearest Timor-Leste embassy or consulate. You can even
do this process in Dili, prior to travel.
Applying for Residence in Timor Leste
A
visa to establish residence is granted to any UK citizen who wishes to enter
Timor Leste and stay here on a permanent basis. After you land in the country
on this visa, you must apply for a residence permit. Holders of family
reunification visas can also apply for a residence permit at the Immigration
Department in Dili.
In
order to be granted this visa, you must clearly specify your purpose which
requires you to stay in Timor Leste on a permanent basis. You must present
proof of sufficient funds, accommodation arrangements, should not hold criminal
or police records, and should be physically and psychologically fit.
You
need to submit proof of employment if you aim to establish residency for
professional activities.
A
visa to establish residence arrives in single entry and allows a maximum stay
of six months.You can apply for this visa at the Embassy of Timor Leste in
London.
Visa Extensions
Once
you arrive in Timor Leste, you can apply for a visa extension at the
Immigration Service Offices in Dili. You should already possess a visa of the
same type in order to be granted an extension. You must lodge an application
before your current visa expires.
Your
visa must fall under the following types so that you are eligible for an
extension:
- Class I Tourist and Business Visa
- Class III Study Visa
- Class IV Cultural, Scientific,
Sporting or Media Visa
- Work Visa
- Resident Permit: You must own a
valid temporary or permanent residence permit if you wish to renew or extend
it.
- Family Reunification Visa: This is
applicable for immediate family of UK nationals, who have been granted a
residence permit.
- Special Stay Authorization: A
special stay authorization is issued to staff members of a designated NGO or
Cooperation Organization. If you do not have a stay authorization by virtue of
that employment, you can lodge an application for a special stay authorization
at the Immigration Service in Dili.
Note:
Transit (Class II) visas and visas to establish residence cannot be extended
after arrival. If you have a transit visa, you have to leave Timor Leste before
its validity expires. If you wish to stay longer, you need to exit the country
and re-enter on another type of visa as per your purpose of visit.
Again,
if you hold a visa to establish residence, you cannot extend it either. You
have to apply for a residence permit before your current visa expires. You can,
however, extend a residence permit.
Fund Requirements to Stay in Timor Leste
You
should note that immigration authorities at border points may not allow you to
enter the country if you fail to prove that you have enough funds to support
your stay in the country.
You
need to have $100 for each entry into the national territory. You need to have
$50 for each day expected to remain in the national territory.
UK Emergency Travel Documents
UK
Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) are allowed only at points of exit in Timor
Leste. You cannot present an ETD to enter the country. If you wish to transit via
Timor-Leste though an ETD, it is advisable to contact the Immigration
Department of Timor-Leste in order to know about the current requirements.
