Everything You Need To Know About A Tonga Visa
Citizens
of the UK and holders of an official British passport do not require any prior
authorization to enter Tonga if they are entering the nation for tourism
purposes. You can enter the nation only with your passport and a few other
additional documents, after which a visit visa on arrival is stamped on your
passport.
However,
for business-related activities, you do need to apply for a visa prior to your
travel dates.
So, here are the major types of visa granted to British citizens:
- Visit Visa on Arrival
- Regular Business Visa
Visit Visa on Arrival
A
visitor’s VOA allows you to enter Tonga for spending a vacation, embarking on a
leisurely trip, or for meeting family and relatives. It comes with a validity
of 30 days, which can be extended to an additional period of 6 months by
applying for the permission with the Principal Immigration Officer.
In
order to avail the VOA facility, please ensure that you carry the following
documents:
- An official British passport, which
is valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Tonga. It should
also contain a minimum of two blank pages
- Evidence displaying that you have
sufficient funds to sustain your stay in Tonga
- Proof of onward or return airline
tickets
- Valid documentation specifying the
exact nature of the trip
- Necessary documents required for the
next destination
Note:
Your passport can have a lesser validity if it is an ordinary Tongan passport
(when you hold dual citizenship) or Diplomatic/ Official Tonga/ Tonga National
Passports. However, they must be valid up to the date you arrive in Tonga.
Once
you have all the above documents, present them to the immigration officer at
the port of entry. After verification, he/she shall stamp a visa on arrival on
your passport. This visa is completely free and you do not need to pay
additional fees to obtain one.
Note:
Confirm with your airline if they allow boarding without a visa. Secondly, go
through your itinerary and check if you have connecting flights and if either
of the overseas nations requires a separate transit visa.
Regular Business Visa
If
you are traveling to Tonga for attending a meeting, conference, or seminar, you
cannot do so while holding a visitor’s VOA. You need to apply for a regular
business visa via the embassy, which arrives in multiple entries and is valid
for 90 days.
It
is mandatory that an application for a business visa is done in person. The
requirements for this category of visa are highly volatile and hence, we
recommend you contact the embassy for further assistance.

schooling or study courses while in Tonga. You should also ensure that your
passport is valid during your stay period in the nation. If you breach any of
these Immigration Acts, you may be prosecuted and subjected to a term of imprisonment
or a heavy fine or sometimes, both.
Transiting via Tonga
You
do not need a visa to transit through Tonga, provided you remain in the
international transit area of the airport. You must continue your journey on
the same flight or the first connecting flight.
You
should additionally carry a valid passport, have proof of onward/return airline
tickets, and possess all the documents required for the next destination. If a
visa is required for your next destination, you should keep it handy. Additionally,
confirm with your airline if boarding is allowed without a visa.

the stray incident that you happen to lose your passport during your stay in
Tonga, you can apply for UK Emergency Travel Documents. ETDs are accepted by
Tongan immigration officials at points of entry, airside transit and exit from

Laws and Customs in Tonga
Tonga
is an extremely religious and conservative country. So, try to follow a modest
dress code and respect their local customs and culture.
The nation’s residents
strictly follow the Sabbath. And on Sundays, if you undertake recreational
activities outside your hotel/resort, it may be seen as offensive by the
residents.
Again,
homosexuality is illegal and LGBT activities may result in prosecution. The
import, export, and usage of illegal drugs can earn a penalty of 30 years in prison
and a heavy fine.
Do
note that Tonga does not have any British diplomatic representation and hence
if you fall in any problem, you shall receive limited consular assistance. The
nearest office is that of the British High Commission in Suva, Fiji, which
extends support to British travelers.
Health certificates
Many
regions in Tonga hold a risk of Zika virus transmission. Therefore, ensure that
you carry travel and medical insurance before you travel.
The country has
limited medical facilities and even for the most basic health issues, medical
evacuation becomes necessary. So make sure that your health insurance covers
air-ambulance evacuation as well.
