Everything you need to know about Ghana visa
Ghana
is a West African country, located along the Gulf of Guinea and Atlantic Ocean. And as a UK citizen, you
need a visa for Ghana, whether you are traveling to the nation for
tourism, business, or study-related activities.
You need to apply for a Ghana visa via
the Ghana High Commission in London. Alternatively, you can use our fully

The Ghana Embassy in London only accepts visa applications with prior appointments only. Normal waiting times are 4-5 days before an appointment is available at the consulate.
Types of Visas
The
popular types of visas offered by the Ghana High Commission to UK residents are
Tourist and Business Visas. There are also other categories of visas, like
transit and student, offered as per your purpose of entry into the country. All of the Ghana visa requirements are discussed in detail below.
Tourist Visa
A Ghana tourist visa is required if you are planning to enter Ghana for tourism
purposes, such as recreation, sightseeing and meeting friends and family.
It
is available in single and multiple entry types. A single-entry tourist visa
comes with validity for three and six months, whereas a multiple entry tourist visa
offers validity for one and two years. Each visa allows you a maximum stay period
of 90 days.
Note:
You can apply for a multiple entry visa only when you have possessed one or two
Ghana visas in the previous years.
In
order to apply for a tourist visa, you need:
- An online application form, to
be filled completely. Once all the details are entered, you need to
download, print, and sign it.
- An original, official passport,
with a minimum validity of 6 months from your date of entry into Ghana. It should have at least one blank page for visa stamping.
- Two passport-size photographs, not older than 6 months and
taken against a white background.
- Copy of round tickets or your
travel itinerary.
- A copy of the International
Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever.
- A copy of your confirmed hotel
reservations, detailing your name, hotel’s name and address, and duration
of stay.
- For minors under 18 years, you
will need to attach a
copy of the birth certificate and a letter of consent (complete with
signatures of both parents or guardians, authorizing the trip and
explaining who will be accompanying the children during travel)
Business Visa
A Ghana business visa allows you to enter Ghana
for commercial and trade activities. These can include being involved in sales
or making contacts for your company. Other activities comprise business
negotiations, attending business meetings, expeditions and conferences.
It
is available in single and multiple entry types. A single entry business visa
comes with a validity of three or six months, whereas a multiple entry business visa
offers a validity of one or two years. Each visa allows you a maximum stay period
of 90 days.
Note: Just like a tourist visa, you can apply for a multiple entry
business visa only when you have possessed one or two Ghana visas in the
previous years.
In
order to apply for a business visa for Ghana, you need:
- An online application form, to
be filled completely. Once all the details are entered, you need to
download, print, and sign it.
- An original, official passport,
with a minimum validity of 6 months from your date of entry into Ghana. It
should have at least one blank page for visa stamping.
- Two passport-size photographs,not older than 6 months and
taken against a white background.
- A copy of the International
Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever.
- A business letter in original and signed from your company in the
UK. It should give your introduction and specify your position in the organization and that you work there. It must also explain the purpose of
your travel plans and contain the names and addresses of companies to be contacted in Ghana. Additionally, it must tell the visa type and validity
you seek, along with providing proof of sufficient funds for travel.
- A business invitation letter from the sponsoring company in Ghana.
It should be typed/printed on the company letterhead and addressed to
"The Embassy of Ghana, London". It must be signed by a senior official
in original, should specify your employment status, explain your business activity in Ghana, contain the names and addresses of companies to be
contacted in Ghana, and specify the visa type and validity.
Transit Visa
You
need a transit visa if you are air-transiting via Ghana airports to another
country or to your own homeland. It is available in single and multiple entry
types, both with a validity of 3 days.
If you are direct air-transiting, without entering the country, you do
not need a visa.
For
a transit visa, you will need:
- An online application form, to
be filled completely. Once all the details are entered, you need to
download, print, and sign it.
- An original, official passport,
with a minimum validity of 6 months from your date of entry into Ghana. It
should have at least one blank page for visa stamping.
- Two passport-size photographs,not older than 6 months and
taken against a white background.
- A copy of the International
Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever.
Ghana Visa UK for Students
A student visa allows any prospective
student to enter Ghana for studies, after getting an offer of admission from a recognised
and accredited Institution in the country.
It
is available in single and multiple entry types. A single entry student visa
comes with a validity of three or six months, whereas a multiple entry student visa
offers a validity of one or two years.
The visa requirements are:
- An online application form, to
be filled completely. Once all the details are entered, you need to
download, print, and sign it.
- An original, official passport,
with a minimum validity of 6 months from your date of entry into Ghana. It
should have at least one blank page for visa stamping.
- Two passport-size photographs,not older than 6 months and
taken against a white background.
- A copy of the International
Certificate of Vaccination for Yellow Fever.
- Proof that you have made the
required fee payment to the school or college. You can attach this
evidence in the form of receipts.
- Proof of accommodation to cover
your stay period in Ghana. This can be in the form of hotel reservations
or proof that you shall own/rent a home during your tenure. Otherwise,
attach a commitment of maintenance and accommodation, which is filled and
signed by a resident from Ghana.
- Evidence that you have the
funds to cover your stay in the country.
- Proof that the potential
educational institute has accepted your candidature.
How much is a visa for Ghana?
For visa for Ghana from UK, the fees range from £60 for one
entry visa to £280 for a two-year multiple entry visa. The Ghana visa fees is
payable online directly at the embassy website at the time of completing the
application form.
How long does Ghana visa take?
3 days for express service or 10 business days for normal
service. The option to choose the service level is provided at the time of
completion of the Ghana visa form.
Dual nationality
The government of Ghana accepts dual nationality. For this purpose, if you are a
national of both Ghana and the UK, you must register with the Interior Ministry
in Ghana.
They
will issue you a Dual Nationality card. Once you present this card at the ports
of entry, immigration officials will allow you to enter the country without a
visa.
Registration
If
you are a foreign national and are a permanent resident of Ghana, a resident in
the nation for at least 90 days in any calendar year, or aged 6 years and
above, you must register with the
National Identification Authority (NIA) of Ghana. They will issue you a
non-citizen Ghana card.
A
non-citizen Ghana card will be needed when you apply for a residence permit or
seek admission into educational institutions within the country.
You
will also need to present it when you conduct any financial transactions in
Ghana, such as opening a bank account, paying taxes, registering sim cards, and
applying for public or government services, facilities, approvals and
permissions.
If
you fail to produce this card, your activity will be considered as a criminal breach
of law.
Volunteering Activities
If
you plan to enter Ghana for volunteering activities, it is advisable to contact
the Commission of Ghana in London so that you can get the required visa type.
Additionally,
if you are travelling for gathering work experience, you should know the
specific laws that define and regulate such purposes of visit. The immigrations
must approve that you will be rendering your services to a reputable organisation,
before they grant you entry inside the nation.
UK Emergency Travel Documents
You
cannot use UK Emergency Travel Documents (ETDs) in order to enter Ghana or
transit to another country. However, you can use an ETD to exit Ghana.
