Everything you need to know about a Chile Visa
British
travelers, holding a valid British citizen passport, do not need a visa to
travel to Chile. However, there’s a catch.
You can only use the visa-free
facility when your travel includes tourism or business activities.
By
tourism, we mean family visits, vacations, or leisure and sightseeing. Business
activities involve attending business meetings, negotiating trade deals,
participating in paid research and lectures, investment and purchasing,
partaking in business conferences and seminars, and attending training courses.
Now,
if you plan to work or study in Chile, you will need a visa. Again, the
visa-exemption policy is valid only for visits that are less than 90 days.
For
longer travel plans, you have to contact your nearest Chilean Embassy or the Chilean
Immigration Department located in San Antonio 580, Santiago. Telephone: 600 626
4222.
Once
you arrive in Chile, you will be issued a ‘Tarjeta de Turismo - Tourist Card’
by the immigration authorities. This card is available in an A5 sized white form.
You have to keep this document and present it at the exit port prior to your
departure.
In
order to be granted entry under the visa-free policy, you need to have a
British citizen passport that is valid for the entire duration of your stay.
Additionally, you may be asked to produce proof of onward/return travel, or
evidence of enough funds to sustain your intended stay period.
Other visa types
As
we mentioned before, you will need a visa in advance, prior to your travel
dates, if you visit Chile for purposes related to studies, work, or residence.
Below are the three primary visa types offered by Chilean missions:
Work
visa
A
Chilean work visa is issued in multiple entries and allows a maximum stay
period of up to 730 days. In order to apply for one, you will need the
following documents:
- A completely filled and signed,online visa
application form
- An original passport that is valid
for at least six months and has a minimum of one blank page
- A passport size photograph
- An employment contract, which is
issued by your employer in Chile. It has to be signed by the concerned
organization and must be legalized by a Chilean public notary. It should
additionally be legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs
- An original police report or
Certificate of Good Conduct from your city’s local police station
- A letter, which is written by the
applicant detailing the exact purpose of the visit, travel dates, cities to be
visited, and accommodation arrangements
- A comprehensive health certificate
ensuring that the applicant is not afflicted with any infectious or contagious
deceases
- Evidence of financial stability
Student
visa
A
multiple-entry student visa is valid for one year and also allows a maximum
stay of up to 365 days. The documents required for this visa are your passport,
an application form, one photo, medical report, and police report -- the
specifications of which are already outlined above. Additionally, you will
need:
- If you are going on a scholarship
program, you should submit a document that confirms your travel documents,
certification of the international academic institute, and the public or
private entity that has approved the scholarship
- Evidence of educational
qualification in the form of an enrolment form or acceptance proof that allows
you to study in an officially recognized educational institution in Chile
Temporary
stay visa
A
multiple-entry temporary stay visa allows a maximum stay of up to 365 days. For
this purpose, you will need an application form, a passport, photo, police
report, health certificate, and proof of financial means.
We have already
explained the details under the work visa section.
In
addition, you have to submit a personal letter and address it to the Consul of
Chile. It should specify the purpose of the trip, dates of travel, cities to be
visited, and place of accommodation.
Dual nationality
If
you hold both British and Chilean citizenship, you should use only your Chilean
passport to enter and leave the nation.
Traveling with minors
For
children who are born in Chile and are aged under 18 years, they need a Chilean
passport to leave the nation. If minors are exiting Chile alone or are
accompanied by only one parent/guardian, friends, relatives, or a group, they
must be able to present authorization before departing Chile.
UK Emergency Travel Documents
Chilean
authorities accept UK Emergency Travel Documents at ports of entry, airside
transit and exit from the nation, provided the ETD is valid for the intended
stay period in Chile.
