What is e-visa to India

E-visa is an abbreviation for Electronic Visa, which is also referred to as e-tourist visa or e-business visa. The e-visa applications to India are managed by the Ministry of Home affairs who uses this system to automate and speed up the visa approval process for short term travellers to India. The e-visa system allows the Government of India to screen all passengers before they are allowed to enter India. The application must be filled by everybody with a passport traveling from the eligible country and must be done online.

Why do I need e-visa to India?

All travelers to India require a visa or approval of some form or other to enter the country. This is done to manage people movement and ensure safety and security of the country. Previously all applicants were required to apply for a regular visa that was stamped in their passports. For this, the applicants were required to visit their local Indian embassy with all the documents. It was an elaborate and time consuming process which deterred many from visiting India altogether. However, since 2016, the process is made easier with the introduction of the e-visa which can be applied online

What are different types of e-visa?

e-Visa has 5sub-categories i.e. e-Tourist visa, e-Business visa, e-Medical visa, e-Medical Attendant visa and e-Conference visa. Depending on the purpose of your travel, an appropriate visa will be applied by us. You can instruct us if you think you need a specific type of visa. You can apply for a 30 Days visa for short visits or a 5 year multiple entry visa for regular visits to India.

How long is e-visa valid for?

Depending on your application, the e-visa is valid from 30 Days to 5 Years from the date of issue. You can apply for the e-visa at least 4 months before your travel. When you travel to India, at the immigration, you will need to produce the e-visa approval and provide your fingerprints. You will then be granted entry in India and an approval stamped will be placed in your passport. You can stay in India for a maximum of 180 days from this date of arrival.

When should I apply?

You can apply for the Indian e-visa at least 4 months before your travel date and up to 48 hours before your travel. We however recommend you to apply at least a week before you travel whenever possible to allow for delays. The Indian embassy usually take 2-3 days to process the visa. For urgent applications we can get visa approval within 24-36 hours.

Are there any exceptions for the eligibility of Indian Tourist visa?

Nationals of Pakistan origin cannot apply for e-tourist visa or e-business visa to India. Even holders of diplomatic passports, official passports and travel documents of any country cannot apply for e-visa to India. They are only eligible for regular visa application via their local Indian embassy.

How long does the visa application take?

The visa application normally takes 72 hours to process, however in most cases the approval is granted within 48 hours after successful submission of the visa application. In case of emergencies, we can process and deliver your visa within 24 to 36 hours. However, this is dependent on your documents in correct order and your application not being help up by the embassy for further checks.

What if my e-visa is not granted?

If you have directly applied with the embassy than we can assist you in checking the application to determine reason for rejection. On the basis of the rejection reason, you can reapply for an e-visa using our service. In some cases, you will be required to make a new application for a regular visa. In such cases, you may need to visit the local Indian embassy for processing a new visa application.

Do I require an e-visa to visit from UK to India?

British nationals visiting India will need a visa of some sort for their travel. In most cases, an e-visa will be sufficient.

Can I click picture of documents using my smartphone?

Yes, you can click a picture of the passport information page using a smartphone and email it to us. We still need to edit the image and submit it to the embassy with the application in a certain prescribed format. Hence, we advise you to click the image at a straighter angle. You may need to hold the passport open while you click the image. In this case, please ensure that the fingers are not covering the information on the passport. The image must be that of the information page where applicants picture is visible.

Can I travel anywhere in India with e-visa?

You can travel to any part in India using an e-visa, except restricted areas. These areas include Andaman and Nicobar Islands, parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Manipur, Mizoram, Sikkim, Uttarakhand. Note: only parts of these states are within restricted areas. In case of doubt, speak to your travel provider who can clarify the status of the place you intend to visit.
